How to Remove Blackheads at Home Safely

Those tiny dark dots on your nose and chin are one of the most common skin complaints — and one of the most picked at. Squeezing feels productive, but it often leaves redness, marks and bigger pores behind.

Here's a gentler approach that actually works.

What blackheads actually are

A blackhead is a pore clogged with oil and dead skin. The top is exposed to air, which turns it dark — it's not dirt. Pakistan's heat, humidity, dust and pollution can make clogged pores more likely, especially if you have oily skin. The American Academy of Dermatology's acne guide explains how they form.

Step 1: Cleanse properly (twice a day)

Use a gentle cleanser morning and night, and after sweating. Don't scrub hard — it irritates skin and can make oiliness worse. The AAD's face washing basics are worth a read.

Step 2: Open up the pores with warmth

Take a warm shower or hold a warm, damp towel on your face for a few minutes. This softens what's inside the pore.

Step 3: Use a pore vacuum — gently

An electric blackhead remover uses gentle suction to lift out softened buildup. Our 5-in-1 electric blackhead and pore cleaner has different heads and suction levels.

  1. Start on the lowest suction. Always.
  2. Keep it moving. Glide over the area; never hold it in one place for more than a second or two.
  3. Pull the skin slightly taut with your other hand.
  4. Go once over each area. Don't keep repeating the same spot.
  5. Avoid active pimples, broken skin, sunburn and thin areas under the eyes.

Some light redness for an hour is normal. Bruising means the suction was too strong or you held it too long.

Step 4: Calm and moisturise

Splash with cool water and apply a light, non-comedogenic moisturiser. Yes, even oily skin needs one.

Step 5: Prevent them coming back

  • Look for products with salicylic acid, which helps keep pores clear.
  • Change your pillowcase weekly.
  • Remove makeup every night, no excuses.
  • Wear sunscreen — many are now made for oily skin.

The AAD also shares practical tips for acne-prone skin. If blackheads come with painful or widespread acne, see a dermatologist — the NHS acne page explains treatment options.

How often should I use a pore vacuum?

Once a week is plenty for most people. Sensitive skin? Every two weeks.
